The Night Hunter
June 14 6pm
“Fredrik Zetterström seamlessly and confidently portrays every role” – Svenska Dagbladet
An old summer house is about to be sold, stirring memories long buried in the northern Swedish marshland. Nattjägare (Night Hunter) draws us into a gripping family drama, where we encounter various characters living in the shadow of an unthinkable tragedy.
What happens when the ground beneath your feet suddenly gives way? When a loved one chooses to end their life, and those left behind must navigate a world forever changed? Through four characters – the son as a child, the son as an adult, the grandfather, and the moose hunter who once found the body in the bog – Night Hunter explores different ways of experiencing, avoiding, or approaching life’s darkest moments. In this search, buried emotions of guilt and rage are revealed, alongside a complex love between father and son.
Internationally acclaimed baritone Fredrik Zetterström gives voice to all the roles in an intimate interplay with Love Derwinger, one of Sweden’s foremost pianists. Together, they create a musical experience that offers both comfort and challenge.
Night Hunter is a newly composed chamber opera, created by composer Catharina Backman and librettist and playwright Kerstin Perski. Together, they invite us into a powerful story of reconciliation – about humanity’s smallness in the face of nature’s overwhelming force, but also about our inner strength to find meaning and beauty even in the darkest depths. A poignant reminder of the significance each of us holds, in life and beyond, and how our actions may echo through generations.
Night Hunter is a co-production between Riksteatern and Folkoperan.
